Russian forces kill one in Zaporizhzhia apartment building after Putin said he would consider civilian infrastructure truce in Ukraine
Russian forces launched a missile strike on a nine-story residential building in Zaporizhzhia on the morning of April 22, sparking a large fire. According to Ivan Fedorov, head of the Zaporizhzhia Regional Military Administration, one person was killed and two others were injured.
The General Staff of Ukraine reported 121 combat clashes across the front line in the past 24 hours. Russian forces launched one missile strike, 101 airstrikes, deployed 995 kamikaze drones, and shelled Ukrainian positions and settlements over 4,100 times. Earlier, Russia halted aerial attacks on Ukraine amid the Easter truce, which lasted only for 30 hours, and during which Kyiv documented nearly 3,000 violations.
Explosions were reported around 11:30 AM, shortly after an air raid alert was issued due to the threat of guided aerial bomb attacks. Emergency services are currently on-site, working to extinguish the fire and assess the extent of the damage. Residents have been urged to remain in shelters until further notice.
The situation remains fluid, with updates expected from rescue teams and local authorities.
Fedorov also noted that on 21 April, Russian troops carried out 552 attacks across 12 settlements in Zaporizhzhia Oblast.
Russian forces occupy approximately 70% of Zaporizhzhia Oblast, while the remaining 30%—including the regional capital, Zaporizhzhia city—is under Ukrainian control.
Since early April 2025, Russian forces have escalated offensive operations in Zaporizhzhia Oblast as part of a broader Russian spring offensive, increasing combat intensity and conducting attacks southwest and southeast of Orikhiv.
Meanwhile, Russian ruler Vladimir Putin commented on Ukraine’s proposal for a temporary halt to strikes on civilian infrastructure, BBC reports. Speaking to Russian media, he said the idea of a 30-day truce, suggested by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, would require careful analysis and could potentially be discussed bilaterally.
