Ukraine “willing to give up 20% of its land,” senior US official claimed talking to NYP – Euromaidan Press

President Donald Trump said on 21 April that he will present the details of a proposed Ukraine peace deal within three days, as reported by the New York Post.

The announcement follows months of behind-the-scenes US talks with both separately Kyiv and Moscow, amid Trump’s pivot towards Russia, while he is pressing for a ceasefire agreement, allegedly to end the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Speaking to reporters, Trump said,

“I will be giving you a full detail over the next three days,” adding, “We had very good meetings on Ukraine, Russia … We’ll see how that works.”

Earlier, Trump warned he may withdraw from his negotiations if no progress is made. While neither Kyiv nor Moscow has officially committed to the peace plan, both sides have reportedly reviewed the terms.

According to a senior US administration official quoted by the New York Post, the plan may include the deployment of European troops to Ukraine as a “resiliency force” to enforce a ceasefire.

“The resiliency force is part of the security guarantees that the Ukrainians want and we hope they get,” the official said.

In addition, the proposal reportedly includes a separate joint peacekeeping mission, which would involve representatives from Ukraine, Russia, and a non-NATO third country. This commission would allegedly monitor the frontlines and ensure ceasefire compliance. The official also stated that the US might contribute financially but would not place troops on the ground.

Claims that Ukraine ready to cede its territory

The New York Post also quoted a senior official claiming that during meetings in Paris last week, Ukraine appeared “willing to give up 20% of its land” so long as it was considered a “de facto” recognition of the territory and not “de jure,”, including areas currently under Russian occupation, as long as the recognition was not made de jure.

“‘De facto’ means we recognize the Russians occupy this land, but we don’t say [Ukraine is] going to give it up forever,” the official said.

The official also stated that Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umierov said Ukraine was about “90%” aligned with the US-proposed peace deal. However, Umierov publicly denied this characterization in a statement to Sky News.

“We have several principled positions,” he said, noting that the defense ministry “doesn’t make political decisions.”

The Wall Street Journal reported previously that the Trump ceasefire plan may include US recognition of Crimea as Russian territory—breaking with US policy since its annexation by Russia in 2014. A senior official cited by the New York Post indicated that this, along with partial sanctions relief, could be included in a “last, best offer” to bring Russia into agreement.
